Change is in the air

Il Sole esiste da 4,5 miliardi di anni e ne vivrà per altrettanti. Ha assistito a sette estinzioni di massa e percepito temperature e condizioni che gli umani non possono neanche immaginare. Il cambiamento climatico oggi in atto è per lui un’insignificante variazione del continuo e perenne mutamento di cui l’ambiente continua a fare esperienza.

The Sun has existed for 4.5 billion years and will continue to do so. It has witnessed seven great extinctions and experienced temperatures and conditions that humanity can’t even imagine. From its point of view, the shift we are currently going through is an insignificant variation of the ongoing and perpetual change that the climate is constantly undergoing.

È il 1984 quando all’Atmospherical Research Institute of America avviene un fatto straordinario: ILLUMIA, una macchina nata per archiviare dati e per studiare la correlazione tra la composizione atmosferica e il colore dei tramonti, ha iniziato autonomamente a rielaborare le informazioni, generando tramonti passati e futuri partendo dalla nascita del Sole fino ad arrivare alla sua morte.

It was 1984 when something extraordinary has occurred at the Atmospherical Research Institute of America: ILLUMIA, a machine designed to store data and study the relationship between atmospheric composition and the color of sunsets, has begun to autonomously reprocess the information, generating past and future sunsets from the Sun’s birth to its death.

Mark Spencer Tyne, l’ingegnere che ha assistito al miracolo, ha subito sentito l’esigenza di diffondere il messaggio della macchina. Ha deciso, quindi, di organizzare una mostra dove è possibile conoscere la storia di ILLUMIA e interagire con essa. Scegliendo una città e un anno di partenza, ILLUMIA genera il tramonto corrispondente, da cui è possibile muoversi avanti e indietro nel tempo.
Il messaggio della macchina è rivelato dal referto stampato: “Questo è 1 tramonto, 1 di 1.132.800.000.000. Un piccolo sguardo in un costante cambiamento che è sempre stato e sempre sarà. Ciò che si percepisce è solo una piccola parte del tutto.”

The engineer who witnessed the miracle, Mark Spencer Tyne, felt an instant urge to spread the machine’s message throughout the world by setting up an exhibition. Inside the display, visitors may learn about the machine’s history and interact with it. Selecting a city and a year, ILLUMIA generates the matching sunset, from which you may traverse back and forth in time by interacting with the machine.
The printed data reveals a message from the machine: “It’s just one sunset, 1 of 1.132.800.000.000. A glimpse into a constant change that has always been and always will be. What is perceived is only a tiny fraction of the whole.”
